It seems that in today’s modern world, confidence is a currency similar to money — we all want more of it, and it never seems enough. This is in part because of the self-help movement’s connection of confidence with success. (But this concept is actually a myth — more on that later.) It’s possible many of us actually have an inflated idea of what confidence feels like. We expect to one day never feel any anxiety when life change happens. But our brains are primal, wired to trigger anxiety and fear sensations if they sense danger — the oft talked about ‘fight or flight’ response. Of course nowadays “danger” comes less in the form of a wild animal and more in the form of a job interview or first date.

Can you think of anything else we could add to this list?

But acknowledgement and reflection are powerful tools for healing. Because the only way through it, is through it.

Do you ever find yourself thinking about all of the “shoulds”- the things you wish you would have done or feel bad about not doing?

Often times we ‘should’ ourselves into thoughts that lead to feelings of guilt or shame.

When we take small actions, like cleaning off one shelf instead of worrying about a whole basement, we feel a sense of accomplishment that otherwise may not have been there.

Life is a practice and it takes constant maintenance. Do what you can when you can, it doesn’t have to be perfect!
